Senior most TABLA Maestro Professor J. Massey born on 11th January 1939, in Kanpur in a reputed Christian family with no backing no support or no any heredity, settled down in the holy city of Varanasi, in 1958 to learn the TABLA. He has been teaching many students through his Art of Tabla and has given multiple performances in various platforms. For more than 6 decades he has been serving as a percusionist in the Holy city of Varanasi.

He became disciple of “Padma Bhushan Pandit Samta Prasad” alias”Godai Maharaj” and lived ALONE FOR 14 YEARS TO ACHIEVE HIS GOAL. He also learned TABLA from “Pandit Kamta Prasad”(Yonger brother of Pandit Samta Prasad) in the beginning. He was attracted to the TABLA from his childhood and started TABLA playing in 1953, in local music programmes of his city Kanpur. It was God’s Gift to him.

He is the only "Top Grade” artist in his community in all over India .Now he is Pandit of the percussion instrument . He is “SELECTION GRADE 1” Artist since 1989 approved by “ALL INDIA RADIO” NEW DELHI. In 1972, he was called by RADIO KURSEONG as their staff and served for 3 months. And then 1973 he joined “DOORDARSHAN” (T.V) “LUCKNOW’, as a staff Artist and served for 2 months, due to some personal reason left the job and came back to Varanasi. He was taking “Audition” for all type of categories of music for “UV- VANI” (youth programme), of ALL INDIA RADIO, VARANASI, since 1977 to 1982 and again 1985 to 1987 after coming back from ABROAD. After 22 years successful service of ALL INDIA RADIO, VARANASI, he has been retired in 1997.


CONFERENCES AND PROGRAMMES


  • Before coming to Varanasi, he participated in Inter University YOUTH FESTIVAL-New Delhi, in the year 1957.
  • In May 1958, he participated in the "SPRING FESTIVAL" Kashmir and received GOLD MEDAL from the "BAKSHI GULAM MOHAMMAD", he was known as Prime Minister.
  • In 1963, he passed B.MUS examination with merit and did Top, from "Prayag Sangeet Samiti" Allahabad and got Medal, for Merit.
  • In 1964 he participated in "ALL INDIA COMPETITION" organized by "PRAYAG SANGEET SAMITI" ALLAHABAD IN "SPECIAL GROUP" and got first prize.
  • He was appointed as TABLA Teacher in "AGRASEN KANYA INTER COLLEGE", VARANASI, in 1962 and served six years up to 1968.
  • In the year 1976, he was appointed very first music staff of All India Radio in Varanasi, Station. And during his 22 years of service, he accompanied with thousands of artists of various categories of music.

  • In 1966 "KAL KE KALAKAR" organized by "SURSINGAR SANSAD" BOMBAY, and was awarded "TALMANI"
  • SAWAI "GANDHARAVA PUNYATITHI" Poona, organized by Pt. Bhimsen Joshi (the Famous Vocalist) in the same year 1966.
  • "SARVA BHARTIYA SANGEET SAMMELAN" awarded him the title of "Professor, in Kolkata in 1966.
  • He won the special group competition in 1964 organised by the Prayag Sangeet Samiti , Allahabad and he was awarded top position.
  • Then he was invited to play in Prayag Sangeet Samiti , Allahabad, in their very Popular Music conference from the year 1967 and many years in sequence.
  • Railway Institute, Music conference, awarded him as Juniour Gudai Maharaj in 1973 in Allahabad. Many years from seventies to eighties.
  • DURGYANA MUSIC CONFERENCE, AMRITSAR, many times, in many years and Many More.

“He is famous for his polite and helpful nature among all the Artists and is example and inspriration for the new comers. He is a life member and patron of world peace Society. His C.D was released with Pt. Amar Nath Mishra(Sitar) by INDIAN MUSIC ARCHIVE, New York(America) in 2001.”
